 Ignatius Cohort (First Year)

Kevin Burke, SJ

A native of Wyoming and a Jesuit of the Missouri Province, Fr. Burke received his doctorate in Systematic Theology from Weston Jesuit with a dissertation exploring the philosophical foundations for theology developed by the Salvadoran theologian and martyr, Ignacio Ellacuría. The Ground Beneath the Cross: The Theology of Ignacio Ellacuría, was published by Georgetown University Press in 2000. He later co-edited a collection of essays entitled Love that Produces Hope: The Thought of Ignacio Ellacuría (Liturgical Press, 2006).

A Jesuit for thirty-five years, Fr. Burke is deeply rooted in Ignatian spirituality and he loves telling the stories of those who exemplify this distinctive way of following Christ. Two other books grow out of this love: Pedro Arrupe: Essential Writings (Orbis Books, 2004) and The Ignatian Tradition (Liturgical Press, 2009), a book he co-authored and co-edited with his sister, Dr. Eileen Burke-Sullivan.

Julia D.E. Prinz, V.D.M.F., Ph.D.

Sr. Prinz is the Provincial of the Verbum Dei Missionary Fraternity in the U.S. She received her Ph.D from the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley, as well as Masters degrees from the PUU in Rome and the Georg-August University in Goettingen, Germany. Prinz taught in Madrid, Spain and is currently a lecturer in Christian Spirituality at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley. Her areas of interest include biblical hermeneutics, political theology, and Christian spirituality. Julia co-facilitates the Year One program for Companions, along with Kevin Burke, S.J., at JST.
