To be a companion is to be a person who is to be a person of deep desires, generosity, and faith:

  • desires to give back to one’s community through service action with those in need;
  • desires much from life, holding the conviction that retirement from one’s life labor is the beginning of a new journey;
  • desires to draw nearer to the love of God through the experience of volunteerism and prayer.

Application Process

Applications for the 2016-2017 Companions Program are available now.  We accept applicants until our program is filled and recommend that applications are submitted prior to September 9.  Candidates may be contacted for brief interviews via phone or Skype.   Our program begins with our Opening Retreat on Saturday,  September 24, 2016.

We highly recommend that you attend a local Come & See  or Information Session if at all possible. Our Come & See Experiences occur in conjunction with our monthly Ignatian Companions Gatherings and are located at our host sites. Information Sessions provide an in-depth overview of our program and typically are hosted by local parishes and community nonprofits.  These sessions include current participants who can share their experiences.

Program Overview:   For a one-page overview of Ignatian Companions Click Here

Service

To be a Companion one must have a strong desire to work with the poor and marginalized in our community. It is expected that a Companion would provide minimally between six-ten hours of service per week, from September to June, to individuals who are poor and marginalized.

Spirituality

To be a Companion one must also have a strong desire to deepen one’s spiritual life through the experience of prayer and reflection based on The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Each Companion commits to a period of daily prayer and reflection, a monthly meeting with a Spiritual Director, and a monthly meeting of sharing one’s experiences and celebrating the Eucharist. In addition, our year begins and ends with a one day retreat. The heart of The Companions is to be found in the experience of ministry to Christ’s poor.

If these desires in any way touch your heart or imagination then The Companions in Ignatian Service and Spirituality program may be a way for you to make your deepest desires a reality.

Cost

Our approach aims to be transparent: Program operations in 2015-2016 cost $3000 per person. We invite participants, alumni, community foundations and Jesuit partners to share in the stewardship of our program resources.  This includes a contribution at the start of the program year. If financial assistance is needed for this cost, please let us know when you apply. No one will be turned away due to cost.
